When creating a custom logo and branding your business, be careful not to overlook the most important thing. Before you think about re-branding or designing graphics, make an effort to understand your competition and the “category” of your business. Knowing your target market is key. The most important part of our Design Phase 1 is research. If we are creating strategic graphic design solutions for your business branding , we must look at other businesses like yours in the area and around the globe.
At our complimentary consultation, we discuss our client’s product or service. We talk about the category they are in, food, beverage, medical, home improvement? We try to define who their ideal client is. Where do they shop? Who exactly buys their service or product? What other companies provide similar services and how are they going to stand out amongst them? We help them develop a strategic game plan that would enable their business to grow and compete with other similar businesses in the community.
It’s so simple to do a web search of your competition. We encourage our clients to go online and pretend they are their own customer. Do a web search of the product and see the results. This can be so eye-opening!
Our first task in our logo design for On Track Garage Doors of Putnam County, NY was to drive around the area, studying their competition. There are several related establishments in the surrounding counties in New York. We snapped pictures of them, so we could review them back at our office.
Next we did an online search of all related topics including garage door repair and installation. We searched images to see what was out there. We noticed bold shapes, primary colors & simple images and icons. This was the category “look”.
We collect those logo designs, assemble them on a document, and print them out for our team to have as graphic design sample reference. We also print out the photos of OnTrack’s competitors (the ones we took around town) assembling those for our design reference.
We strive for unique ownable graphic design solutions.
Knowing your competitors branding is the key to standing out and looking unique, special, credentialed!
