When you create a logo… using a ligature can make it look unique. A ligature is when you take two letterforms and join them together. Taking the font and changing it to make it proprietary, yet still readable. But be careful..you can go overboard!
Avoid these common mistakes when you’re designing your logo:
1. Too many “tricks” in one logo:
You can overdo it when manipulating a font. Be careful not to mess with it too much. One, possibly two ligatures are enough when you create a logo design.
2. Not enough “tricks” in one logo:
If you just use a straight font/typeface for your logo..you risk looking too generic, with no personality..heck, anyone can type out a word and call it a logo.
Adding a ligature can make your logo look unique. There is a function under the “type” menu pull down called “create outlines”. It takes the typography and converts it into “live art” that you can manipulate by utilizing the hollow arrow tool. You can then push and pull typefaces, while maintaining their integrity.
When creating a logo for Trinity: Psychotherapy, Yoga and Dance, notice how we used a ligature on the letter “R”, swinging it under the logo like an underscore. This gave character to the design, adding a proprietary logo to it.
I’ve been working with typography for many years. I actually love it. I love looking at the different styles of fonts. I love working with type to form new and unique logo designs. I love working with the shapes of positive and negative spaces in the letterforms. Most of all, I love it when I’ve picked some great fonts for a particular project, and I start playing around and manipulating them and they start to ”sing”, meaning, they start to come together and look excellent! You’ll know it when you see it….this is the essence of typography in logo design.
