When I first met my husband of twenty-five years, we were both employed as the graphic designer for competitive firms in New York City. We were fresh out of college, both with a degree in Communication Arts, mine from Parsons School of Design, and his from the University of Cincinnati.
We had both been invited to a party of a mutual friend, and Joe and I were the only “graduates in attendance”. All the others were student interns and such. It was an exciting time because we both held junior designer positions and were each realizing our dream after a long four-year college art education.
I remember our conversations and how we learned the business of our new careers. Those were fun days!
Joe was working for Gerstman & Meyers, I was employed my Peterson & Blythe Associates. Both were prestigious brand agencies, in New York City, specializing in packaging design…man, we were hot young “thangs”! We were both getting a chance to design graphics with the “big boys” and loving every minute of it.
I will never forget when my co-workers started to hear the rumors that I was dating someone who worked for the “competition” and how racy that was. What a fun season!
Stay tuned and I’ll let you in on what it was like designing graphics together as a couple…and, it wasn’t always pretty..but most of the time it was!
