A fun day was had at the CORNucopia in Sleepy Hollow,NY. Now that my children are a bit older, we seldom take adventures to educational/fun events in the area the way we used to. Yesterday was different. We went to the CORNucopia, Hudson Valley’s first corn festival at Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow, NY. What a great event.
My daughter Jana is an employee of the Historic Hudson Valley and she was working at the CORNucopia event, dressed in full period costume, including a corset that she spent all week sewing in my kitchen, complete with bones and all. She looked fabulous and was in her element—as she loves to “go back in time” and dress in authentic period costume. She was teaching the visitors how to make corn husk dolls, a task she is a pro at, since that was a common pass time in on our deck in her younger days.
The event was very well-rounded with a great mix of music, fun activities and food, all with a corn theme! We ate corn chili, made cornhusk dolls and listened to the Ebony Hillbillies play foot stompin’ music. It was tons of fun at CORNucopia!
Our homeschooling days are long over. There was a day that we would go to an event like that and glean off of it all week in our home, writing about it, drawing pictures, math exercises, etc. This time, we just enjoyed ourselves and took in all the fun.
