If a graphic designer is something you want to be, something you are interested in, let me open up my 30+ years of experience and share a few insights.
I chose to enter the graphic design industry many years ago for a very specific reason. I loved the idea of designing for the “layman”. Designing something that the average person would purchase at a store or a printed piece that someone would use to be informed, sounded like an interesting direction to pursue. Using my artistic talent to bring beauty to others in a practical way was fine by me. I chose to bring great design to regular folks.
As the years went by, I developed a love for the industry. I loved the constraint of graphics. I loved the problem solving aspects of it all. Trying to figure out how to squeeze this or that into a small space is really interesting and challenging to me. Building a design presentation and seeing a logo start to evolve is exhilarating to me. Call me crazy!
Graphic design is everywhere you turn. Even more so now with the internet –we are exposed to graphic design throughout our day.
The unique feature of graphic design is that it has strict boundaries. You are expected to create graphics within strict limitations. When you are given a project there are limits within which you must design. This differentiates graphic design from fine art.
Graphic design in a nutshell is communicating a certain message within a certain size limitation. Creating visual images to represent a certain company or product or service. Using typography, imagery, illustrations or photographs to visually communicate a message.
You’ve got to love the constraints to be a graphic designer…you’ve got to love the challenge—if you don’t, it will drive you mad!
